Mulan was a Disney film that released in 1998. It is the story of a girl named Mulan who takes her ailing father’s spot when he is drafted into the military to go to war against the Hun army.

The problem is that she is living in a very patriarchal society and they won’t allow women to join the military. So she pretends to be a male.

5 Maxine from Wentworth

Bea Smith is locked up while awaiting trial for the attempted murder of her husband and must learn how life works in prison.

Maxine Conway (formerly Max) is a recurring character from Wentworth, portrayed by actor Socratis Otto. Maxine is notable for being Bea Smith’s bodyguard and also for being transgender within the series.

Why she belongs on the list

This was a tough choice because I also really like Sophia on Orange Is The New Black. But when I weighed up who would be more of a heroine then it came down to Maxine.

Maxine fights her own terrible personal struggles and yet she is always there to help Bea. She often gives something up to help her friend. She never complains and has a very strong moral compass.
